Case study

Communication at work

Susan works in the Information Technology environment. Her Dutch background had provided her with a direct manner of speaking and English is her second language. Susan had been having problems getting things done at work. Her manager was not supporting her and her colleagues didn't understand her. Susan was very stressed and often lost her temper.

During the initial coaching session, the coach helped to identify the causes of her problems. Susan found the responses she was receiving were not what she intended. The company had tripled in size in the last 12 months, and had taken on many contractors. She felt that the social side of work was not so prominent; and people had little time to get to know each other.

After two sessions with Karren, Susan's whole work experience has changed. She is both aware of the response she is receiving while speaking to colleagues, and knows whether her message is being heard in the way she means it. She has flexibility in how she expresses her problems and requirements, so she can communicate with different types of people more easily. She says that her aggressiveness and stress levels have gone and she feels in control again.
